R22 Phase Out

Since 1st January 2015, using New or Recycled R22 Refrigerant for servicing/maintenance of refrigeration systems was banned.

R22? It may sound like a Star Wars character, but the similarity ends there – and it isn’t good news for businesses. It is now illegal to top up any refrigeration equipment with R22. If you have refrigeration system(s) with R22 refrigerant, the options you have available are:

Option 1: Replace the whole refrigeration system:

With equipment at least 10-20 years old and in many cases older, this is a very good case to be made for new equipment where design, technology and energy efficiencies have improved significantly. The facts don’t lie. R22 systems are so much more expensive to run than the latest energy efficient technology from leading technology manufacturers. In some cases, a replacement system can cut running costs by as much as 55%. In many cases, the savings mean the upgrade could pay for itself in less than 3 years.

Option 2: Convert the whole refrigeration system

Although it will not be illegal to have equipment running on R22, the downtime and uncertainty of when a leak could render the equipment inoperable could be extremely costly. Therefore, converting to another refrigerant now would be the sensible option, if the equipment is not to be replaced. The good news is that over the last 15 years, a lot of R22 systems have been converted to an alternative refrigerant with great success.

So who pays for all this? If you are the owner/occupier of a commercial or residential building with refrigeration containing R22, then you alone will be hit by the costs and you need to get your refrigeration system altered or changed. If the building is let to a single tenant and the tenant is responsible for the repair and maintenance of the whole building (including plant and equipment), it is likely that the tenant is required to replace equipment which can no longer be repaired.

In conclusion, now is the time to act and replace/convert it before it becomes a problem. If you need help getting to grips with the implications of R22 then please do get in touch with ADK Kooling for the best advice. We can make the process hassle free from the design stage through to installation & also provide you wish maintenance thereafter.
