It depends on the age of your fridge freezer. If it is more than 10 years old, you will be better off throwing it out and purchasing a newer model. This is because a newer model is likely to be more energy efficient. And to cost less to run.
If your fridge is very old, fixing it might be difficult. Technology moves very quickly. And old fridge freezers may require spare parts not widely used anymore. Meaning it could be hard to find and replace them.
If your fridge is not all that old, then it really is worth getting it repaired. Arranging for a repair is much cheaper than buying a new fridge freezer.
Fridge freezers can easily last 15 years or more. But if your fridge freezer is over 10 years old, it will be cheaper in the long-run to purchase a new model. That’s because newer models are more energy efficient. For example, a fridge freezer that is 20 years old may add £160 to your electricity bill every year. Compare that to a new A++ rating model, which may only cost £25 a year in energy fees.
There are a few simple steps that you can do on your own to determine if the problem is serious or not. First, check the thermostat hasn’t accidentally been turned up. Then check to see if you are accidentally blocking the vents with food items or boxes. This can prevent cold air from circulating in your fridge. If your fridge looks “off” it may just be that the bulb needs replacing. Listen out for the “hum” of the motor. If you can hear it, then the repair could be as simple as replacing a bulb.
Another step could be a simple matter of checking if the power supply isn’t faulty. Although all of the above sound obvious, these little problems account for a lot of fridge freezer ‘faults’. If your fridge freezer still does not appear to be working, consider contacting a professional to look at it for you.
In a lot of cases, there is usually a problem with the condenser coils, the evaporator fan motor, or the compressor. The condenser coils help to disperse heat that your fridge freezer makes.
Overtime, dust can build up on these coils. Impacting their ability to work properly. If the motor fan fails, your fridge freezer can no longer circulate cold air. A failed run capacitor or loss of lubricant can stop the motor from working. Compressors can fail if the start relay — a mechanism that gives the compressor its power — also fails.
If your fridge appears to have a lot of moisture in it, or is too hot, or is too cold, or too loud, then it may be on its way out.
Too much moisture, or condensation, can cause mould to grow inside the fridge. Too much heat can be a sign of an overworked motor coming to the end of its life. The same could be said for a refrigeration unit that is running much louder than normal. If your freezer is not defrosting (is full of ice) then there could be a problem with how it regulates temperature.
Another big sign that a lot of people tend to notice early on is that their food spoils much quicker in a broken fridge freezer.
